The Peruvian Amazon occupies more than half of the national territory, has 31 ecosystems, a little less than 15,000 species of animals and more than 60 indigenous ethnic groups.
The Amazon region of Peru is the largest and most biodiverse region in the country, occupying 60% of the national territory and including the departments of Amazonas, Loreto, Madre de Dios, San Martin and Ucayali, with a population of around 3 million inhabitants.

San Martin and its city of Tarapoto
Tarapoto is located in the department of San Martin, is a city in the northern jungle of Peru, at an altitude of 250 meters above sea level on the banks of the Shilcayo River.
It is one of the main tourist and commercial centers of the Peruvian Amazon, which offers a variety of hotels and hostels in and around the city.
In this magical land you can enjoy unique landscapes, admire its flora, fauna, enjoy its waterfalls and adventure tourism.

The Blue Lagoon is probably the most visited place in Tarapoto, this is an ideal destination to spend the day with the family, sunbathe and swim.
As well as the Tarapoto Orchidarium, Lago Lindo, the Ahuashiyacu Waterfalls and the municipalities of Lamas, Chazuta and El Sauce.
In addition to the Cumbaza beach resort, the archaeological remains and petroglyphs of Polish, the Ahuashiyacu waterfalls and the Venecia lagoon are just some of the interesting places that make Tarapoto an excellent tourist destination.
Gocta Waterfall
The Gocta waterfall, which the locals call “La Chorrera”, is an impressive waterfall that measures 771 meters.
This natural charm is located specifically in the district of Valera, near Cocachimba and San Pablo. In recent years, it has been emerging as a preferred route for extreme travelers.
To reach the waterfall pool it is necessary to walk through the extensive valley of cloud forest that surrounds it. The total trip takes 5 and a half hours to 6 hours from the village of Cocachimba, from where we leave.
Along the way, a total of 22 waterfalls can be appreciated, which become more abundant and present during the rainy season.
Chachapoyas
Chachapoyas is the capital city of the Peruvian province of Chachapoyas and, at the same time, of the department of Amazonas. For this reason and for having an airport, Chachapoyas is the starting point to many tourist places in the Peruvian Amazon region, such as:
The Condor Lagoon
It is 93 km south of Chachapoyas and has an altitude of 2600 masl. In addition to its natural beauty, as you can see in the attached photograph, it is especially appreciated by tourists and explorers for the mausoleums or pre-Inca funerary structures nestled in the cliffs that surround it. 219 mummies have been found there.
Getting to this lagoon is not easy. We have to walk 2 hours by road south to the town of Leymebamba. Once there, we will have to walk for 10 to 12 hours to reach the lagoon. If we want to visit the mausoleums we will have to cross the lagoon by rowing for about 45 minutes.
This lagoon has dark water for two reasons. First, because it is quite deep (70 to 150 meters deep), and second, because it has high levels of tannic acid, a chemical compound released by some plants in their decomposition.
Petroglyphs of Pitaya
An archeological site about 3,000 years old located 20 km from the city of Chachapoyas, in the district of Huancas. There are about 30 graphic representations of various species of flora and fauna. Some of these images also allude to hunting days.
To get there we must travel about 9 kilometers (20 min.) by road from the center of Chachapoyas to the district of Huanca, then we will walk 30 minutes more and finally we will have to walk for an hour to finally find the famous Petroglyphs of Pitaya.
Admission to the site is free of charge.
The Well of Yanayacu
Known as “The Fountain of Love”, it is located on the Luya Urco hill, west of the Main Square of Chachapoyas. According to legend, Saint Toribio de Mogrovejo made water emerge from the hill and then, to protect it, a stone and mud wall was built.
Kuelap Fortress
It is a place surrounded by beautiful landscapes. The fortress at first glance looks like an impenetrable place, since it is covered with walls and cliffs on three of its four sides. Together with the surrounding landscape, the natural spectacle offered by the place is unforgettable for any traveler.
Loreto
Loreto is one of the 24 departments that, together with the Constitutional Province of Callao, make up the Republic of Peru. Its capital and most populated city is Iquitos. It is located in the northeast of the country, in the Amazon region.
Iquitos, besides having exotic landscapes with a variety of fauna and flora, has become one of the most visited cities by Peruvians and foreigners.
In addition to navigating the mighty Amazon River and exploring its biodiversity, you can also visit the tourist attractions of the city of Iquitos.
Loreto is also home to exotic landscapes such as the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, which is home to pink dolphins, and the Allpahuayo Mishana National Reserve.
Ucayali
Ucayali is one of the most progressive and beautiful jungle regions. It has interesting tourist attractions, especially ecological, among which are:
Yarinacocha Lagoon:
A beautiful lagoon where there is a fishing port from which you can take a boat to go to one of the various native communities that are connected by the lagoon.
Yarinacocha is also an ideal place to practice sports activities such as fishing, water skiing, rowing, swimming or watching the freshwater dolphins that are found there.
Aguaytía:
It is home to the two longest suspension bridges in the country. From here you have a spectacular view of the traditional boats from which you depart to the villages of the Amazonian communities.
Boquerón del Padre Abad:
It is located within Cordillera Azul. At least 70 waterfalls of great beauty can be observed along the 2-mile-long corridor.
Cordillera Azul National Park:
It is located in the territories of the departments of San Martín, Huánuco, Ucayali and Loreto. It was consolidated as a National Park in 2001 with the goal of conserving the ecological scenarios that cover its territory and that are under threat, as well as the biological diversity that inhabits them.
Velo de la Novia Waterfall:
It is a beautiful waterfall of transparent colors. It is 40 meters high and is surrounded by impressive vegetation.
The devil’s shower
: It is located within the route of the Boquerón del Padre Abad. The waters of this waterfall fall over a rock formation in the shape of a demonic face.
